(Aincrad Arc)
On November 6, 2022, the first and highly anticipated Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (VRMMORPG) for a special VR console, called the NerveGear launched. The game's first 10,000 copies were sold out within moments and about as many players logged in the moment the official service began. However, the enjoyment did not last long as, several hours later, players noticed that the log out button was not working. Soon afterwards, all players were teleported to the Town of Beginnings, where an avatar in red robes descended from the sky and introduced himself as the game's creator, Kayaba Akihiko. Akihiko announced to all players that the only way for them to log out was to beat the game by clearing the boss at the end of each floor of the Floating Castle Aincrad. Akihiko then informed the players that all methods of revival were removed from the game and that if they died in the game, someone from the real world attempted to remove the NerveGear by force, or if the NerveGear was disconnected from a power source or the game's servers for too long, the NerveGear would use microwaves to destroy the player's brain. One of the 1,000 beta testers, named Kirito quickly accepted the "truth" of this MMO and became a solo player without a party,
He throws himself into a never-ending battle to the death. ......
(Fairy Dance Arc)
Kazuto Kirigaya, a.k.a. Kirito, was trapped in "Sword Art Online,
After heroic battle with Akihiko Kayaba, a.k.a. Heathcliff, Kazuto Kirigaya returns to the real world.
At the same time, the survivors of the Death Game also return to life, however 300 others including Asuna, had yet to awaken for unknown reasons.
In order to save Asuna and his loved ones, Kirito challenges a new VRMMORPG "ALfheim Online".
It is a completely new world where fairies fly and dance.
(Phantom Bullet Arc)
It has been a full year since the end of the Sword Art Online incident and ten months since the end of the ALfheim Online incident. Although things had returned to normal for some time, mysterious incidents occur in another VRMMO game, called Gun Gale Online (GGO). In two instances, a player in the game is shot by a mysterious person in a mantle who calls himself ?Death Gun?, and the shot player mysteriously disconnects after a few seconds, only for their real body to be found dead days later. After the second such incident, Kirigaya Kazuto (Kirito) is asked by a member of the VR Crimes Division, Kikuoka Seijirou, to investigate the rumours that the incidents in-game are related to the deaths of the players in the real world. After hearing that Death Gun has a requirement for his targets: the people he supposedly kills are all top players, Kazuto agrees to convert his ALfheim Online avatar into Gun Gale Online using The Seed's character conversion feature to enter the most well known tournament in the game, the Bullet of Bullets, to draw the attention of the mysterious Death Gun.
While asking for directions in the game, Kirito meets a female sniper, named Sinon, who agrees to guide him due to the feminine appearance of his avatar. But unbeknownst to them, Sinon is one of the next targets chosen by Death Gun.
(Calibur Arc)
The quest to acquire the legendary "Excalibur," the holy sword of ALO, has finally begun.
After the confrontation with the Fairy King Obeyron,
Kirito assembles a party of seven members, including Shinon, who has created a new character in "ALO," in addition to his usual party members, and sets out on the quest.
However, a grand backstage event that shakes even the world of "ALO" itself is waiting for them
(Mother's Rosario Arc)
One day Lisbeth informed Asuna of a player known as Absolute Sword who was challenging players on the 24th Floor, while offering an 11-hit Original Sword Skill as a reward. Asuna was told that the mysterious player had actually converted from a different game and that over thirty players who had attempted to challenge the player, including Leafa and even Kirito, were defeated. Having heard that Kirito had shared some words with the player in private before his defeat, as well as thinking that the mysterious player had come for a reason, Asuna decided to challenge the player as well. Asuna battled intensely and even managed to force Yuuki to use her powerful Original Sword Skill, but was still defeated. After they asked her to join her guild called Sleeping Knights.
(Extra Edition)
Memories told from heroes. After the decisive battle, the swordsmen go on a new quest...
Kirito and his friends are going on an underwater quest in "ALO" for Yui, who wants to see a whale.
But here comes a startling revelation.
Surprisingly, Leafa is not so great at swimming.
Asuna and the other girls decided to teach Leafa how to swim in a real world pool.
At the same time, Kirito meets a certain person.
(Sword Art Online The Movie - Ordinal Scale)
In 2022, the world of virtual reality was upended by the arrival of a new invention from a genius programmer, Kayaba Akihiko.
Called NerveGear, it was the first full-dive system and with it, came endless possibilities to VRMMORPGs.
In 2026, a new machine called the Augma is developed to compete against the NerveGear and its successor, the AmuSphere.
A next-gen wearable device, the Augma does not have a full-dive function like its predecessors. Instead, it uses Augmented Reality to get players into the game. It is safe, user-friendly and lets users play while they are conscious, making it an instant hit on the market.
The most popular game on the system is ?Ordinal Scale?, an ARMMORPG developed exclusively for the Augma.
Asuna and the gang have already been playing OS for a while, by the time Kirito decides to join them.
They’re about to find out that Ordinal Scale isn’t all fun and games…
