《Introduction》
The Haneko family is deeply dysfunctional. After the death of her younger son, their mother stopped facing reality, and while every member of the family continues to look away from "inconvenient truths,"they go on living together.
Amidst it all, young Yamabuki Haneko is the only one who truly faces his family, doing whatever he can to hold them together as he grows up.
Based on the novel of the same name by Haruna Terachi, whose work Kawa no Hotori ni Tatsu Mono was nominated for the Japan Booksellers' Award, the film is directed by Yukihiro Morigaki, whose Rude to Love made waves at film festivals around the world.
The film was also selected for the competition section of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, one of the world's leading A-list film festivals, further showcasing Morigaki's acclaimed directorial talent on the international stage.
The screenplay comes from Tomoe Kanno, winner of the Japan Academy Film Prize for Best Screenplay for The Asadas.
Mahiro Takasugi stars as Haneko Yamabuki, anchoring the story with his compelling performance and gentle presence. The supporting cast includes Marika Ito and Mai Fukagawa, who portray contrasting female archetypes, alongside Yuko Ando as mother Yukino, Yuka Kori as older sister Beni, and Ken Yasuda as father Jungo.
Kimiko Yo as the grandmother and Akira Emoto as the grandfather round out this diverse ensemble of talented actors from across generations.
The lies that have piled up over the years were born from love. As those "lies" are finally unraveled, this broken family may at last discover what it truly means to be a family.
《STORY》
Yamabuki is an elementary school student with a secret: he writes letters to his mother pretending to be his younger brother, who has passed away, because she cannot accept his death.
His mother escapes into a world of fantasy. His father runs off with his mistress. His grandfather does nothing but talk about his dreams, while his grandmother makes a living dealing in "lies." And his older sister? She "hates lies and liars."
They may all live under the same roof, but each is living in their own world. Amidst this fractured family, Yamabuki grows up while maintaining a lie of his own.
