In a small village near Antwerp in Belgium, the kind-hearted boy Nello dreams of becoming a painter and lives a happy - though poor - life with his grandfather, his beloved dog Patrasche, his childhood friend Alois, and other friends. However, one misfortune after another befalls Nello. His grandfather dies, the windmill is suspected of being set on fire, he is rejected from a painting competition... Then, one Christmas night, having lost everything, Nello finds himself at the cathedral where two paintings by Rubens that he has long desired to see are being displayed...
