Haruka Nanase, a boy who has a special love for the water, distances himself from swimming for certain reasons. Haruka wanted to be free, bound to nothing, but thanks to Makoto, who is by his side at all times, and Nagisa, a junior he reunites with at Iwatobi High, and Rei, who reminds him just how important his friends are, he takes up swimming again.
Then, alongside his best friends, he faces his last summer as a high school student. Although Haruka now says he swims for his friends, he isn't able to focus the way he expected. He is lost, unable to find his own path for the future. Makoto and the others worry about him, but even so misunderstandings begin to grow. This is the story of how Haruka, bound to his irreplaceable friends with solid "bonds," encounters the view from a new starting block.
